Lines of longitude and latitude are part of the grid system that helps us navigate the Earth, but it can be difficult to remember which is which. There is an easy memory trick that anyone can use to keep the two geography terms straight. Just Remember the Ladder   Next time you are trying to remember the difference between degrees of latitude  and longitude, just think of a ladder. The latitude lines are the rungs and the longitude lines are the long lines that hold those rungs together. Latitude  lines run east and west. Just like rungs on a ladder, they remain parallel as they run across the earths surface. In this way, you can easily remember that latitude is just like ladder-tude. In the same manner, you can remember that lines of  longitude run north to south because they are long. If you are looking up a ladder, the vertical lines appear to meet at the top. The same can be said for longitude lines, which converge as they stretch from the North Pole to the South Pole. How to Remember Latitude and Longitude in Coordinates Coordinates  are often expressed as two sets of numbers. The first number is always the latitude and the second is the longitude. It easy to remember which is which if you think of the two coordinates in alphabetical terms: latitude comes before longitude in the dictionary. For example, the Empire State Building lies at  40.748440 °, -73.984559 °. This means that it is approximately 40 ° north of the equator and 74 ° west of the prime meridian. When reading coordinates, you will also come across negative and positive numbers. The equator is 0 ° latitude. Points north of the equator are expressed with positive numbers and points to the south are expressed as negative numbers. There are 90 degrees  in either direction.The prime meridian is 0 ° longitude. Points to the east are expressed as positive numbers and points to the west are expressed as negative numbers. There are 180 degrees  in either direction. If positive and negative numbers are not used, the coordinates may include the letter for the direction instead. That same location for the Empire State Building may be formatted like this:  N40 ° 44.9064, W073 ° 59.0735. But wait, where did that extra set of numbers come from? This last example of  coordinates is commonly used when reading a  GPS  and the second numbers (44.9061 and 59.0735) indicate the minutes, which helps us pinpoint the exact latitude and longitude of a location. How Does Time Factor Into Latitude and Longitude? Lets take a look at latitude because it is the easier of the two examples.   For each minute that you travel north of the equator, you will travel 1/60th of a degree  or about 1 mile. That is because there are approximately 69 miles between degrees of latitude  (rounded down to 60 to make the examples easier). In order to get from  40.748440 degrees to an exact minute north of the equator, we need to express those minutes. That is where that second number comes into play.   N40 ° 44.9064 can be translated as  40 degrees and 44.9064 minutes north of the equator 3 Common Formats of Coordinates We have reviewed two formats that coordinates can be given in, but there are actually three. Lets review all of them using the Empire State Building example. Ingmar Bergman’s film, Seventh Seal, reflects his views on life in an allegorical fashion. Bergman utilizes the setting of a medieval, plague-ridden landscape to metaphorically investigate the existence of god and meaning of life. The film follows the knight, Antonius, as he returns from the Crusades with his squire, Jons. Seventh Seal begins with a shot of the heavens as a powerful orchestrated piece of music plays. A passage from the Book of Revelation is recited, â€Å"And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour,† (Revelation 8:1). Antonius and Jons lie on a beach of pebbles. The land is framed proportional to the sky, juxtaposing the kingdoms of heaven and earth. A chess set sits to the right of Antonius. The camera pans away from him, zooming in on the chess pieces. It symbolically equates Antonius as a piece of the game. A man cloaked in black approaches, revealing himself to be death. He states that he has come for them. Antonius challenges him to a chess match. Death agrees that if Antonius is able to defeat death he shall go free. The game is continued throughout the film. As Antonius and Jons move along their journey, death continuosly lurks as an ominous force. The film constantly makes references to death and uncertainty through the presents of the plague. The sky in the background is often cloudy as though God is absent from the heavens and oblivious to the suffering on earth. In one scene, Jons seeks directions from a man who appears to be sleeping; the man is dead and rotting. Not only is the man unable to provide direction, but there is also no divine direction. The plague represents the absence of God and humanity’s uncertainty when faced with unexplainable destruction. In a scene later in the film, death impersonates a confessional priest. He listens as Antonius speaks about the mystery of god, stating, â€Å"Is it so cruelly inconceivable to grasp God with the senses? Why should he hide himself in a mist of half-spoken promises and unseen miracles? What is going to happen to those of us who want to believe but aren’t able to? † Death, who embodies the complete absence of life, remains silent. Bergman depicts mans suffering, metaphorically addressing the inabilities of humanity to comprehend the purpose of both the human self and the divine. The plague challenges faith, as an incomprehensible punishment inflicted for unexplainable reasons. It leaves the populous to deal with the absence of divine direction. This is demonstrated very powerfully throughout the film. Jof and his fellow actors dance and sing on a small village stage. The actors represent innocence and good nature. Abruptly, religious music interrupts the actor’s production. A procession of priests, baring crosses and incense, marches though the village. They sing in unison as shirtless men accompanying them whip themselves and each other. The entire village drops to its knees as the horrifying parade of suffering passes. This demonstrates the absence of God. The religious, unable to comprehend the suffering that is the plague, torture themselves in an attempt to appease God. This phenomenon is continued when Antonius witnesses a young girl tied to a post. She is deprived of water and whimpering in pain. The authorities believe her to be bewitched by the devil and the cause of the plague. The girl is to be burned alive. This event communicates the true horror of humans left to suffering and doubt. The actor Jof and his wife Mia represent natural beauty and good nature. The scenes with them bring a warmth and happiness to the, dark suffering depicted. The lighting is often softer and brighter around Jof and Mia, contrasting them with the bleak atmosphere of the film. Antonius befriends the actors, and they all share a picnic of milk and wild strawberries. The simplicity of this meal is symbolic. It represents the beauty that exists in simplicity itself. Antonius reminisces about his life before the Crusades and his love for the wife he left behind. He expresses his ongoing burden of faith stating, â€Å"Faith is a torment did you know that? It is like loving someone who is out there in the darkness but never appears, no matter how loudly you call. † This statement embodies the questions presented by Bergman throughout Seventh Seal. The Seventh Seal concludes with Antonius knocking over the chess pieces in order to distract death from Jof and Mia. Death claims Antonius and his companions as Jof has a vision of them in the distance doing the dance of death. The viewer is eft with powerful messages concerning the existence of God and meaning of life. Comparing the film with Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru, it is apparent that both share similar ending themes. The protagonist in each film pursues a selfless action. In Ikiru, Watanabe, the protagonist, abandons the bureaucracy he has been a part of for so long in order to fight to create a local park. The Seventh Seal depicts the game of chess between Antonius and death. Antoni us knocks over the pieces, allowing his friends to escape. Both films protagonists fight for things bigger than themselves. Bergman and Kurosawa explore similar themes, but the Seventh Seal maintains a darker outlook on the world. Camila is an Argentinean film set in the mid 19th Essay century, during the Rosas regime. The film focuses on the lives of a young girl, Camila, and her Jesuit priest Ladislao Gutierrez. Camila and Ladisalo fall in love and the film follows their troubles. Through following the events that happen with Camila and Ladisalo, the director shows how restrictive and devout followers of Rosas were and of the resentment against him. The unjust ways of the Rosas regime were illustrated passively. Instead of having Rosas a central character issuing orders to be carried out, Rosas was instead placed in the background of the film. You would see Rosas through the actions of the church, military, and of the common people. His picture adorned the towns, everyone was to wear a red ribbon symbolizing their loyalty to Rosas. His supporters spoke of him proudly while those against him had to hide in silence. To illustrate the inherent problems of the Rosas era, the director chose to show the injustices through the ordeals of Camila and Ladislao. First of all, in everyday life, Rosas demanded public showings of loyalty. Every citizen had to wear a bright red ribbon symbolizing their faith in their leader. Slaves, commoners, and even priests had to wear this ribbon. Through the execution of the bookseller, the tyranny of the Rosas regime is clear. He will tolerate to questions to his authority or allow anyone with a dissenti ng opinion to speak without fear of retribution. At the end of the film when the two young lovers are captured, Rosas rears his head again. Wishing to set an example to inspire terror into the masses, he doesnt hold Camilas execution even with the knowledge that she is pregnant. To further illustrate this point, the film makes it appear that Rosas is operating directly in contrast with the blessings of god. While never specific in historical events, overall the films third person look into the regime of Rosas does provide interesting historical insight about life in mid 19th century Argentina. Costumes and settings in Camila illustrate the lengths that the director made to make the film historically accurate. Pretrial Publicity allows for the media to put out information about a person on trial before the case even takes place. This type of publicity can be very effective, but it can also be an invasion of personal rights. In the case of pretrial publicity there are conflicting rights such as freedom of press and the right to a fair trial. These rights are essentially equal, but does the freedom of press impose on the right to a fair trial? Jurors are people from the public, who are not to have any prior knowledge of a trail, but when the media decides to cover a case before the trial even takes place hen the public already has preconceptions. These preconceptions can influence the public and make it hard to find reliable Jurors that are not already emotionally invested in the case. For example, pretrial publicity was at play a lot in the case of Casey Anthony, who was accused of murdering her daughter. Casey Anthony was bombarded by the media long before her trial began. The public instantly developed their own opinions on this case because it involved the murder of a two year old child. The media chose to cover this case immensely, such as when Headline News anchor Nancy Grace took on the Casey Anthony trial as a personal cause to see Justice done for a murdered child. And sometimes there is no apparent reason other than a slow news day for a case to suddenly attract great media attention (7). When cases like the Casey Anthony one, are on the news and in the papers every single day for a very long period of time it is hard to believe that a reliable Jury could be found. It seems perfectly okay that these trials are constantly followed because of freedom of press, but then the amount of people that can be art of the Jury are limited. Just like everyone else, Casey Anthony deserved a fair trial, one in which the Jurors were not influenced by the press that already surrounded the case before the trial even happened. In order to find Jurors who are unbiased, a questionnaire could be administered or the location of the trial could be changed. Does either of these actually eliminate the effects of pretrial publicity? In the instance of the Casey Anthony case, the trial was moved from Florida to Ohio. It seems that the public of Ohio would not be as partial as the people in Florida but who is to say that the people in Ohio are unbiased? The news is shown throughout the entire country, in every state, on every news station. Changing the location of a trial may lessen the effects of pretrial publicity, but it will not solve the issue completely. As far as a questionnaire goes, a Juror might lie and say that, he/ she can set aside any prejudicial information learned from Journalists before the case even began but Jurors assurances are not necessarily believable when pretrial publicity is intense and widespread (Strandler, 17). The first amendment seems to verride the right to a fair trial at times and it is because the media has so much to relate to the public. The media can be extremely powerful and influential, especially during times of huge trials. The media knows the public wants as much information as the media can give them. The media wants to do their Job, attracting more viewers to television programs and selling more newspapers. Not only does this affect the people of the public, who have the potential to be in the Jury, but it also attects the Judges. High Profile trials are the cases that cause the most difficulty tor udges, as well as lawyers. Another example of a case effected by pretrial publicity is the 0. 1. Simpson trial. This was about the famous football player who was arrested for the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. Not only was the Simpson trial the most heavily covered legal case of all time, it may have been the most widely cover media event ever (Bruschke, 2) The Simpson trial began in January 1995, and then was finally given to the Jury towards the end of September in 1995. This trial got so much attention, CNBC network had a television program every weekday night of a anel discussing the ins and outs of the case. The Judge felt that because of the amount of media attention the Jurors were sequestered. This means to be separate or apart from the world, this is quite common in high profile criminal prosecution cases. The Jurors are sent to stay in a hotel room without access to news media and the public, and they are only allowed to see their families under tight supervision. As far as the Simpson trial goes, the Jurors were sequestered for 265 days. The Jurors took four hours to deliberate till reaching their decision. It can be said that this was indeed a fair trial; however, extensive measures did have to be taken because of the media. There are different degrees of information that is presented which makes it hard to distinguish that line between news reporting and entertainment, or also fiction and reality. What occurs in the courtroom and what the public hears is the different sides in which this line is met. Whether this publicity is creating a mindset for Jurors or not, this legal debate divides opinion on how research in the courtroom should be evaluated. The evolution of media in society, as well as social media, has effected out Judicial system. Laws have been passed such as the U. S. Supreme Courts decision in the Sheppard vs. Maxwell trial in 1966. Sheppard convictions were dismissed due to the fact that pretrial publicity had been precluded. It is instructed that Judges control their court room and make sure that pretrial publicity does not affect the outcome of a case. With the way technology is changing, this rapid spread of information may evolve even more. Till then Courts have found a may to control the media publicity effects with in the courtroom in respect towards the First and Sixth Amendment.
